Last week while looking for crock pot recipes, I came across this recipe for apple butter that was made in a crock pot. It’s pretty old and comes from an Ohio Grange cookbook. I didn’t give the recipe much thought until I went to the Hartville Marketplace, a local farmer’s market on Saturday. Fruits and vegetables were at their peak and very abundant. Several local orchards had apples. I couldn’t resist a half peck of empire apples. They are very tart and crisp. I knew immediately that I had to make this recipe.
I couldn’t recall making this recipe in the past. The idea of using a crock pot was ingenuous. Apple butter is usually made in large outdoor copper kettles at autumn harvest festivals in this area. I must tell you that the results far surpassed my expectations. The taste is identical to apple butter stirred all day over a wood fire. I highly recommend you give this recipe a try. Apple butter is especially good on pancakes, as well as toast. It also makes a killer apple butter cake.

Crock Pot Apple Butter
5 lbs. apples – peeled and sliced
3 cups granulated sugar
1 cup brown sugar
3 cups apple cider
4 teaspoons cinnamon
1 teaspoon cloves
Cook the cider and sliced apples for 25 minutes in a large pot. Press through a sieve. If you do not have a sieve, process the apples in batches in your food processor until they were very smooth. Put the processed apples in a 5 or 6 quart crock pot and add sugars and spices. Cook on high without lid for 7-8 hours. Seal in jars.
